Our Story ...

W
e are an ordinary married couple with an ordinary dream; to build our own home in our own chosen spot in the world. OK well, we didn’t get to choose the county really, although Cumbria is beautiful and is actually one of my favourite places in the world, we ended up here because of work, or lack of it to be precise.

As I mention above, in 2002, we found ourselves living in Beautiful Cumbria and since moving here we have lived in four different villages with the ultimate desire of finding a plot of land on which we could build our own dream house. Yet, however plentiful land in Cumbria may be, building plots are scarce and usually very expensive.

History ...

T
he history surrounding how we came to get the plot is an interesting tale and I first need to say that on our many drives through the Lake District we’d often driven through this little corner of potential beauty, known as Southwaite Mill, commenting many times on how it needed someone with money to come in and uplift things. I even have photos, I’ve taken as we’ve driven through Southwaite, of how things looked before someone finally did get hold of the whole mill and surrounding buildings. (See gallery …)

But for us things began to take shape sometime late 2013 early 2014, when we were in the middle of purchasing another, much smaller, building plot, in Cockermouth, still on the edge of the National Park. The whole thing came to an awful end, in November 2014, when we found out that there was a ransom strip across the pathway that we’d need to cross to get onto our drive and into our home. We instantly pulled out of the purchase and were left feeling heavy and sad after spending over 12 months working on house designs and getting planning approval. However, within four days of what we can now describe as a blip, another estate agent, who we’d been in discussion with 2 years previous, made contact with us about the plot in Southwaite, explaining that if we could prove our finances then the plot was ours and wouldn’t go back on the market.

Wahoo, the plot was ours.
